About our ebook shelf ...

It's not easy for libraries to lend ebooks right now. The limited ebook services available to libraries can be costly to supply. We're keeping an eye on the situation, and will update the ebook news section of this page as new developments come along. In the meantime, we've decided to use our ebook shelf to signpost customers to some of the vast choice of mostly free ebooks available for download.

ebook news

  1. The main library ebook service provider, Overdrive, is not compatible with Amazon's Kindle, the current market leader. Overdrive have reached an agreement with Amazon for libraries in the United States, but not the UK.
  2. Not all publishers are making their titles available for libraries to lend. Hachette, Simon & Schuster, Faber & Quercus are declining to allow libraries to lend single ebooks. Lonely Planet do not allow ebook loans either.
  3. Penguin are now withdrawing all new titles from library ebook loans, and Random House will only offer a backlist, not new titles. Harper Collins have imposed a 26 loan limit per download before libraries are obliged to buy another copy.

A large percentage of ebooks published in the UK (estimated to be 80%)is not currently being made available to British libraries. Readers are further limited by compatibility with library ebook lending services, and some of these services are costly to supply. We would like to hear from customers about their views on ebooks. Please contact Pam Hand for enquiries or information.
